Sexual Health Q & A

What is sexual health?

Your sexual health is a crucial aspect of your well-being, not only when you’re in a relationship, but for yourself and your identity. Everyone should have safe sexual experiences and take steps to avoid illness and disease related to sexual practices.

You should feel comfortable talking with Dr. Chang about your sexual health. He advises patients with concerns about birth control methods, avoiding sexually transmitted diseases, and safe sex practices.

Why is sexual health important?

Your sexual health is essential for many reasons, including your ability to have children later on and your overall physical and mental wellness.

It's also essential to your interpersonal relationships, as sex is a large part of intimate relationships and marriage. Staying on top of your sex life helps you achieve happiness in your relationships and allows you to avoid complications.

What is involved in STD testing?

Dr. Chang uses several forms of STD testing, depending on your symptoms. For example, a blood test will diagnose HIV, while a swab test is used to detect HPV, herpes, and chlamydia.

Dr. Chang uses a swab to collect tissues from the potentially infected area for the swab test. In females, he swabs the vagina or cervix, while in males, he swabs the penis or urethra.

You may also require a urine test if you're experiencing symptoms of trichomonas or gonorrhea.

There are a variety of methods to prevent STDs, such as condoms, but none of these methods are infallible. For peace of mind, Dr. Chang offers STD testing.

What treatments are available for STDs?

Dr. Chang treats STDs based on the type and severity of your diagnosis. Some STDs require a round of antibiotics, while others aren’t curable and may require medication to manage symptoms.

If Dr. Chang diagnoses you with chlamydia, gonorrhea, or trichomoniasis, he’ll prescribe an antibiotic to treat the infection. It’s crucial that you finish all of the antibiotics and abstain from sex during treatment.

Viral STDs aren’t curable, although you can manage them with medications. If you have HIV or herpes, Dr. Chang prescribes you antiviral drugs to manage the condition.

Herpes goes through bouts of remission and breakouts, even on antiviral medications. However, taking antivirals regularly can help minimize your symptoms.
