Botox Q & A

What is Botox®?

Botox is an injectable substance that comes from botulinum toxin. This toxin comes from the deadly form of food poisoning called botulism but is safe in the small doses Dr. Chang uses.

Dr. Chang uses Botox to treat medical conditions as well as for cosmetic purposes. It’s a safe and effective treatment for many suffering from TMJ disorder, nerve pain, and pelvic pain.

Botox is an effective treatment option for other medical conditions as well, including:

  • Chronic migraines
  • Hyperhidrosis
  • Muscle dystonia
  • Overactive bladder
  • Eyelid twitching

Dr. Chang evaluates your condition to determine if Botox is a good fit.

How does Botox work?

Botox is a type of neurotoxin that works by temporarily paralyzing muscles and nerves. The botulinum toxin works directly on the nerves, blocking the signals they send to your muscles.

When Dr. Chang injects Botox into a particular area of your body, the nerves can't send messages to your muscles. After this, your muscles can't contract – an effect which lasts about 3 to 4 months per injection.

Once the Botox wears off, your muscles relax once again, and wrinkles are visible. To keep your skin looking youthful, you'll need to continue Botox injections every few months.

How is Botox used for cosmetic purposes?

Dr. Chang also uses Botox injections for aesthetics . A few of the cosmetic conditions Dr. Chang treats with Botox include:

  • Wrinkles
  • Fine lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Frown lines
  • Neck bands
  • Skin dimpling
  • Square jawlines

Botox is a great option when you’re looking to slow the signs of aging on your skin. Dr. Chang also uses Botox injections with other treatments for optimal results.

How long does Botox take to work?

Depending on the purpose of your Botox injections, you may notice the effects of the toxin right away. However, it usually takes about a week to notice the results of your treatment.

For best results, follow the aftercare instructions carefully. Avoid rubbing the treatment area for at least 12 hours after the injections.

Dr. Chang also advises avoiding excessive physical activity for 24 hours after your injection. You should also avoid lying down for several hours to prevent the toxin from spreading.

The results of Botox injections can last several months if you follow your aftercare instructions.
